01 / Your questions

Our space & our community

Is Maine Afro Yoga open to everyone?

Yes. Maine Afro Yoga welcomes people of all backgrounds. You do not need to be an immigrant, African, or an experienced yoga student to join our regular studio classes. Come to move, build strength, rest, and connect.

I know you as Maine Afro Yoga Project. What is changing?

Our work began with the immigrant community. We are now expanding into a wellness space with paid classes, workshops, and space rentals open to the wider public. Maine Afro Yoga Project continues as our community program for immigrants. That community remains an important part of who we are.

What is the difference between Maine Afro Yoga and Maine Afro Yoga Project?

Maine Afro Yoga is the wider wellness space, where anyone can purchase regular studio classes and passes. Maine Afro Yoga Project is our fiscally sponsored charitable community program, focused on immigrant wellbeing through studio movement, community gatherings, outdoor activities, and healing circles. Learn about the community project →

Do I have to join the community project to take a class?

No. You can purchase a drop-in, class pass, or studio membership for regular classes. Community project participation is separate, and its membership does not automatically include regular paid studio classes.

Who are the community project activities for?

The project focuses on immigrants and their experiences of belonging, connection, and wellbeing. Each activity has its own participation details. Visit the project page to find the right program and registration link. If you are already part of our community, please reach out with any questions about the move or your participation.

Do I need experience or flexibility?

You do not need to be flexible or already have a yoga practice to start. Class pace and intensity vary, so read the description before choosing. If you are unsure, ask us to help you find a starting point that suits you.

Do I have to keep up with everyone?

You can pause, rest, and move at your own pace. Let your teacher know if you would like an alternative to a movement. You are welcome to ask questions before class so you feel more comfortable getting started.

Your first visit & passes

Is there an introductory offer?

Yes. First-time clients can try three regular studio classes for $45. The pass is valid for 21 days from your first class and can be purchased once per person. Workshops and special events are separate. Plan your first visit →

Do I need a membership?

What should I bring?

Wear comfortable clothing and bring water. Mats and class equipment are provided. You are welcome to bring your own mat and a small towel. If you use a studio mat, a $5 donation is encouraged and entirely optional.

When should I arrive?

Please arrive 10–15 minutes early, especially for your first class. This gives you time to check in, meet your teacher, and set up your equipment.

Where are you, and is there parking?

Find us at 175 Main Street, South Portland, ME 04106. On-site parking is available. Our First Visit page includes a marked image showing the studio and parking areas. See the parking guide →

Does my pass include workshops and special events?

Regular studio passes cover the classes included in that pass. Workshops and special events have separate registration and pricing unless the event listing specifically says otherwise. Check the details before booking.
